The Top 20 Most Beautiful Hospitals in the U.S. 2012…

by Tera Tuten on July 11, 2012

20 Most Beautiful Hospitals in the U.S. 2012 Rankings

After a record of nearly 170,000 votes (more than double last year’s tally), the results are in for Soliant’s 4th annual list of the 20 Most Beautiful Hospitals in America.

This year, Florida continues its dominance as the state with the most beautiful hospitals on our list (#13, #7 and #4) but it doesn’t take the top spot.

California appears twice (#10 and #2) as does Colorado (#18 and #16.)

The big heavy-hitter per-capita is Arizona (#20 and #14.)

Making their way onto our rankings for the first time this year are New Mexico, Iowa, and Ohio, though neither of those states contain our big winner. (The #1 entry got more than 27 times as many votes as #20.)

Want to know what hospital you voted the single most beautiful in America…??

Take a look at our 2012 rankings below:

20.Phoenix Children’s Hospital, Phoenix, AZ (1,597 votes)

A delightful LED-infused “desert flower” theme with a fantastical “waterfall” of light puts anxious patients at ease. The colorful main atrium looks more like the concession area of a modern movie multiplex a than a hospital reception area.

19. Carolina Medical Center Pineville, Charlotte, NC (1,681 votes)

A cleanly put-together modern institution whose recent expansion has morphed its campus into a full-service facility with many more specialists and the opportunity for more advanced care.

> View Image

18. Sky Ridge Medical Center, Lone Tree, CO (2,122 votes)

Perhaps the most beautiful hospital against the surrounding terrain: This modest outpost facility sits, seemingly alone, on a majestic patch of Colorado prairie.

> View Image

17. Long Island Jewish Medical Center and Katz Women’s Hospital, Long Island, NY (2,141 votes)

The most conservative of the public spaces in this NYC-area facility look like a stylish mega-mall food court. The less conservative spaces look like the front reception hall at Sweden’s Ice Hotel. Very cool (no pun intended…)

16. Medical Center of the Rockies, Loveland, CO (2,220 votes)

Opened in February 2007, this new facility has won the Exemplary Service Overall Best Performer award from patient-satisfaction survey company Avatar International. Outdoor sitting areas are punctuated with flowing streams and faux rock gorges – arguably nicer than some local restaurants and grills for which you’d need a reservation.

> View Image

15. Jackson Purchase Medical Center, Mayfield, KY (2,274 votes)

The only hospital in the area to receive an “A” from the recent Hospital Safety Scores survey is also not tough to look at. Among other innovative additions, the beautiful water-side facility has an extensive recipe and healthy cooking resource section online.

14. Mercy Gilbert Medical Center, Gilbert, AZ (2,399 votes)

Sculptures and other outdoor art adorn the space below a dramatic arch and dome structure. The facility was named one of the Top Ten Healing Hospitals for 2008 by the Baptist Healing Trust, through its subsidiary, Healing Trust Services.

13. MD Anderson Cancer Center Orlando, Orlando, FL (2,686 votes)

A bold one-piece curved front façade and unique triangular atrium rises three stories above the main reception area and welcoming public spaces, with two-storey-plus real palm trees swaying in an indoor breeze.

> View Image

12. University Hospital Ahuja Medical Center, Beachwood, OH (2,773 votes)

A true showpiece of modern architecture, blended with a masterfully-landscaped surrounding grounds. A walk among the trees, wetlands, and large ponds on the grounds could have you feeling like you’re on a pleasant weekend getaway, rather than a necessary medical visit.

> View Image

11. Paoli Hospital, Paoli, PA (2,824 votes)

Rarely have we seen such an extreme light-color scheme done so well, as is the case with patient rooms and a soon-to-open $11-million maternity unit in this award-winning Pennsylvania hospital. Well-worth a Google…

> View Image

10. UC San Diego Sulpizio Cardiovascular Center, La Jolla, CA (3,352 votes)

This world-class cardiovascular center was strikingly-lit in red at night throughout February 2012 to commemorate the American Heart Association’s “Go Red for Women” campaign…A fine gesture for a hospital that looks good in any light.

> View Image

9. SSM St. Clare Health Center, Fenton, MO (4,089 votes)

Soaring curved staircases and inspiration to create a “best water feature” award for hospitals top the list of gaze-worthy features at this attractive Missouri health center.

> View Image

8. Orange City Area Health System, Orange City, IA (4,375 votes)

If legendary architect Frank Lloyd Wright ever got to designing hospitals in Iowa, he might have put together something to the effect of this tasteful Usonian House-inspired facility. Many new U.S. hospitals in the West and Midwest have pulled-off such a look but few as gracefully as this one, complete with state-of-the-art aquatic wellness center.

> View Image

7. Health Central Hospital, Ocoee, FL (4,422 votes)

You can’t miss this building’s iconic “Big red wedge” built as part of a 1993 structure that replaced the [previous] 1952 facility. The current 440,000 square-foot, 171-bed acute care hospital and physician offices include a recently-updated 34-bed Emergency Center.

> View Image

6. San Juan Regional Medical Center, Farmington, NM (4,998 votes)

Every new hospital should have hardwood floors in patient rooms. A cozy environment indoors and out is fostered by stone patios and big comfy wood patio chairs next to outdoor fireplaces for winter use (in case it ever gets a degree or two below room temperature in the winter ; )

> View Image

5. Elmhurst Memorial Healthcare, Elmhurst, IL (8,992 votes)

The most comforting hospitals feel not like a hospital but like a prestigious hotel you’re checking in to on vacation (were it not for the bed wheels, side rails, and height, etc.. adjustments, most of the rooms here could indeed pass for those at modestly-appointed hotel.)

> View Image

4. Miami Children’s Hospital, Miami, FL (9,466 votes)

Painted like a kid-themed hotel at Disney World (speaking of that hospital/hotel-feel) the exterior and interior of this facility are brimming with fun – a primary-colored castle that looks like it was born straight from the imaginations of its hopeful patients.

> View Image

3. LeConte Medical Center, Sevierville, TN (13,883 votes)

An inspiring three storey $115-million-dollar “mountain modern” rock & stone lodge, nestled near Tennessee’s rustic Smoky Mountains. The hospital’s main entrance opens onto a two-story natural-stone lobby, where a natural feel is created with “wood-look” laminate columns and panels with birch accents.

> View Image

2. Eisenhower Medical Center, Rancho Mirage, CA (39,071 votes)

A patient-safety-based-design that incorporates evidence-based processes into each patient room, and central pavilions with refined color palettes and Renaissance-based art create a modern piazza feel to what is truly one of America’s best-looking medical institutions.

And the winner is…

 1. Martha Jefferson Hospital, Charlottesville, VA (43,217 votes)

Some hospitals on our yearly list boast striking, almost aggressive beauty, while some (like our 2012 winner) display a more subtle, welcoming charm equal-to or greater-than the most spectacular hospital architecture.

Designed by Kahler Slater, Inc. this $275-million-dollar 176-bed, hospitals six levels are split into the top of Virginia’s Pantops Mountain.

Completed last year, a pitched roof and extensive gardens to promote a feeling of home, designer slate elevator bays, decorative frosted glass windows to allow light in as much as possible while maintaining privacy, and hand-crafted tile designed specifically for each patient bathroom, are just some of the thousands of big (and little) touches that make Martha Jefferson Hospital this year’s winner for Most Beautiful Hospital in America.

Congratulations winners! I’m sure as beautiful these are on the outside the inside must be just as nice. It would be amazing to work at any of these.

Healthcare design is at its best when it reflects the community it serves and supports the common care giving vision, and passion, for ideal care experiences. I believe MJH is that magical alignment. The winners are the patients they serve. Well done MJH!

For a community of around 50,000 and service area of 130,000, the city of Farmington, New Mexico and surrounding San Juan County is very honored and fortunate to have San Juan Regional Medical Center be named as the sixth most beautiful hospital in America. To go with the beauty is an amazing staff of dedicated individuals who provide superior services to the patients and their families. You go SJRMC!!!!

Tera Tuten 07.11.12 at 7:50 am – great suggestion! We’ve added links to all of the hospital websites so you can see more about them.

Maegan 07.15.12 at 7:38 pm

Martha Jefferson Hospital is so beautiful outside because of what we do inside and I am just so grateful to be a part of it. I completely agree with what Joe said above! Congratulations to everyone!

Have you thought about a countdown for the Top 20 Most Beautiful Surgical Centers(Ambulatory) in the US?

MVP 07.20.12 at 7:16 pm

I find it interesting that as hospitals all clamor about their costs and cry the blues, many are adding capacity (who does that unless they are making money) and have the funds for “designer slate elevator doors.”

Just sayin’…

Tera.Tuten 07.21.12 at 9:54 am

Rick – great suggestion! We’ll look into the idea of having the Top 20 Most Beautiful Surgical Centers.

Steven Steinberg 08.14.12 at 11:44 am

its a real joy to see hospital’s that reflect the needs of both the patient and staff, that rely on psychosocial aspects to actually improve the healing process and reduce costs, that are an asset to the community they serve. Kudos to the architects, contractors and owners, all of whom worked tirelessly to produce exemplary facilities.

This award is a great achievement for Elmhurst Memorial Hospital, but I still want this hospital to be named as a Best Place To Work. I don’t even care whose list it’s on, just as long as its a Best Place To Work. Just because we’ve not even come close on numerous attempts doesn’t mean I’m giving up.
