After more than a quarter-million votes, the results are in for Soliant’s 2018 Most Beautiful Hospitals in the U.S.
This year’s rankings featured the largest-ever number of hospitals that have appeared in one of our previous rankings – a sizable majority.
And while both Florida and Illinois are represented three times, each of the other hospitals in our 2018 rankings comes from a different state, with no other states getting more than one hospital each on our list.
With ten hospitals from our previous years’ list retaining their ranking, dropping or gaining a position, 2018 was an exciting year to be ranked among Soliant’s 20 Most Beautiful Hospitals in the U.S.
- Sky Ridge Medical Center, Lone Tree, CO
(965 votes) Back on our list after ranking #18 in 2012, perhaps the most beautiful hospital on our list as viewed against the surrounding terrain, this modest outpost facility sits seemingly alone, on a majestic patch of Colorado prairie.
- Cassia Regional Hospital, Burley, ID
(996 votes) Boasting a main entrance with tree-like beams supporting a dramatic log-cabin-style roof, this 25-bed facility serves a wilderness community of roughly 10,000. Cassia makes our list for the first time this year.
- Providence Regional Medical Center, Everett, WA
(1,195 votes) Also making our list for the first time, Providence Regional features a recently-completed half-billion-dollar, 12-story, 680,000 square foot addition that expands the facility to a capacity of 468 beds. The curved towers of the new and old sections rise above the local mountainscape.
- La Rabida Children’s Hospital, Chicago, IL
(1,253 votes) In this year’s rankings, LaRabida goes from #16 to #17. It’s the only hospital in the country solely dedicated to caring for children with chronic illnesses, disabilities, or who have been abused or neglected.
The hospital is recognized by the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA) for its medical home programs and has earned the Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval.
- Marianjoy Rehabilitation Hospital, Wheaton, IL
(1,473 votes) With a warm-water therapy pool, surrounded by a glass ceiling and walls, overlooking a first-of-its-kind rain garden, Marianjoy moves to 16th place this year.
Back on the list after making our 2016, 2013 and 2009 rankings, the facility also features a delightful multi-level campus whose courtyards and walkways are as much fun to explore as they are to look at.
- Duncan Regional Hospital, Duncan, OK
(1,650 votes) Lit up in attractive purple hues at night, the half-dome main entrance to this new-to-our-rankings facility soars gracefully over its small-town Oklahoma home.
- Broughton Hospital, Morganton, NC
(1,999 votes) Broughton jumps from #18 to #14 on our list this year.
The sole “heritage” building on our 2018 list (and only the second ever, after Johns Hopkins), 134-year-old Broughton is the oldest building ever to make our rankings. Its marble-and-brick facade proves that some of the most beautiful buildings are traditional designs that have stood the test of time.
- Valley Children’s Healthcare, Madera, CA
(3,019 votes) Whenever possible, children’s hospitals should put children at ease, and the theme-park-hotel-style architecture of Valley Children’s Healthcare helps do that before visitors even enter. With a cheerful playhouse style and bright colors throughout and within, Valley Children’s Healthcare also recently received Magnet Nursing Certification and celebrates its first year in our rankings.
- Flagler Hospital – St. Augustine, FL
(3,501 votes) Flagler Hospital earns the 12th place in this year’s rankings. Established in 1889, this not-for-profit facility offers “Centers of Excellence” in bariatrics, heart, cancer, maternity, orthopedics and sinus.

(4,299 votes) After taking third-place last year (and the top spot the year before, in 2016) it remains on our list in spot #11 this year.
With a bold new look and completely electronic medical record system, Doctors Memorial is a winner of the Excellence in Construction Merit Award and is the recipient of the National Gold Seal of Approval by the Joint Commission.
- Huntsman Cancer Institute, Salt Lake City, UT
(4,886 votes) The graceful curved glass facades of the Huntsman Cancer Institute reflect beautiful views of the mountains surrounding the Salt Lake Valley. - Intermountain Medical Center, Murray, UT
(6,258 votes) Intermountain jumps from #13 to #9! The flagship of Utah’s Intermountain Hospital network marks its second appearance in our rankings this year. - Mosaic Life Care, Saint Joseph, MO
(6,470 votes) Mosiac Life Care maintains its ranking at #8. On our list for the second time, the Mosaic building is a triumph of strong-lined glass towers and an expansive curved facade of windows facing out onto carefully-landscaped greenery. The net result is a facility that stands tall with both confidence and compassion.
- Norton Sound Regional Hospital, Nome, AK
(10,156 votes) Norton Sound Reg, AK jumps from #9 to #7!
Ranked 11th in our 2013 list, 6th in our 2016 list, and 9th on our 2017 list, this three-story, 36-bed facility holds on to a top-10-ranking at spot #9 on this year’s list.
The $168-million facility serves a population of 10,000, in an untamed wilderness that includes the city of Nome, a vital hub for Northwest Alaska.
- PeaceHealth Sacred Heart Medical Center at RiverBend, Springfield, OR
(11,215 votes) Returning to our list after ranking #14 in 2016, many patient rooms in this 388-bed regional medical center feature beautiful views from the bend of the Eugene/Springfield area’s McKenzie River.
The interior of this peaceful building includes multiple fireplaces, tall ceilings with skylights, and walking trails along the river.
- Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC, Pittsburgh, PA
(17,690 votes) Holding steady at #5, the newly-completed Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC was ranked seventh on our 2010 list when it opened, as well as 10th by HealthExecNews in its 2012 list of most beautiful hospitals in the world. Though its current home is state-of-the-art, the original Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh has a rich history, founded all the way back in 1890.
- Riverview Medical Center, Red Bank, NJ

- Elmhurst Hospital, Elmhurst, IL
(26,975 votes) After being voted the runner-up in 2016 and 2013 (as well as #5 in 2012) Elmhurst Hospital returns in the top 3 this year. This building’s stylish, unintimidating looks have more in-common with a contemporary hotel than most medical facilities.
Built from the ground up to incorporate the latest trends in healthcare design, Elmhurst is enjoying a record 6th year on our list.
- Meadows Regional Medical Center, Vidalia, GA
(66,047 votes) Both our top-two hospitals make their debut in our rankings this year. DNV-GL, Leapfrog, Truven Health Analytics and Becker’s Hospital Review have all selected Meadows Regional Medical Center as a nationwide top choice for health care. Rich wood floors and wall accents honor the region’s farming heritage.
- Golisano Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida, Fort Myers, FL
(68,146 votes) Only opening its doors in 2017, Golisano Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida has never been in our rankings before. Prior to becoming its own facility, it was part of HealthPark Medical Center, which earned a spot in previous rankings. Golisano’s imaginatively-landscaped indoor-and-outdoor gardens and playful multicolored lighting effects across the balconies of its main atrium have helped carry it to the #1 spot. This thoughtful design, created with children and their families in mind, makes Golisano Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida one to admire.
