RESULTS: 20 Most Beautiful Hospitals 2011

by Tera Tuten on July 1, 2011

After almost 70,000 votes,  the results are in for our third annual list of the 20 Most Beautiful Hospitals in America.

From facilities that stand out for their style, to hospitals that inspire with pure audacity, the winners were a fairly even cross-section from many states, though some states are represented more than once.

Technically, Florida could claim the title of “state with the highest number of beautiful hospitals”, as voted by you.

Who won the title of absolute most beautiful hospital in America? You’ll just have to scroll down to see.

Starting with #20, take a look at the 2011 winners below:

20. Metro Health Hospital, Wyoming, MI

Generous bay windows and lots of inviting curves – from furniture to windows to the building itself – likely gave our first hospital here an edge in being voted on to our 2011 rankings.

19 . Florida Hospital Waterman, Tavares, FL

The first of several Florida entries on our list, this facility has repeatedly won the praises of Soliant site visitors, with its trendy event-tent-style entrance and matching parking lot accents. This building looks good day-and-night but its evening lighting shows off its landscaping especially well.

18. Legacy Emanuel, Portland, OR

One of the older buildings on our list, Portland’s Legacy Emanuel stands out particularly for its beautiful children’s hospital. Beauty is far more than just aesthetics of a building. It goes deeper into the hearts and souls of the wonderful people that work within the walls, which is one of the main reasons readers cited for Legacy Emanuel.

17. Sumner Regional Medical Center, Gallatin, TN

You might need an extra minute or two to nod-off in the OR while staring around at this lavishly-appointed Tennessee medical center. From comfy leather loungers with home-entertainment-style TV units to designer marble floor accents, this gorgeously-appointed facility makes spectacular use of natural and artificial lighting.

16. Thomas Memorial Hospital, South Charleston, WV

Clean lines and modern style abound at South Charleston’s newest medical facility.

15. Forest Park Medical Center, Dallas, TX

Upswept steel-and-glass awnings and a designer fountain in the circular drop-off area almost make you forget you’re pulling into a hospital here. Landscaping is cosmopolitan and commercial, without making you feel like you’re at the mall.

14. Union Hospital, Terre Haute, IN

According to Modern Healthcare magazine, Terre Haute’s Union Hospital provides one of the country’s best work environments for its employees. And it’s easy to see how from a visual perspective: This is not only one of the best looking hospital interiors in the U.S. but – in our opinion – one of the coolest looking ones as well.

13. Carson Tahoe Regional Medical Center, Carson City, NV

Windows that aren’t just big but wide in patient rooms and tall in grand public spaces help celebrate the view from this building’s desert paradise surroundings. Trendy design and lots of daring curves in the architecture complete this space’s calming influence as a place of healing.

12. Legacy Salmon Creek Hospital, Vancouver, WA

This snappy Washington-state facility’s easy-to-navigate roadways are punctuated with interesting outdoor sculptures. Inside, graceful Romanesque columns and designer marble floors give way to glass walkways and bridges reminiscent of a newly-renovated museum or concert hall.

11. McKay-Dee Hospital Center, Ogden, UT

It’s nice when patients can take a walk in a nearby park. When their hospital is built into a man-made lake and park during simultaneous construction, the result is a hospital within a park, a park with its own hospital, and a place that welcomes both body and soul to get well.

10. Sharp Memorial Hospital, San Diego, CA

Is this a hospital or a Salvador Dali painting? Either way, this mind-warping building’s playful lines extend all the way from its exterior front façade to wavy windowscapes looking out from multi-level public spaces.

9. Manatee Memorial Hospital, Bradenton, FL

Another dazzling Florida entry, this fledgling facility gets brownie points for challenging the eye with soaring spires and sexy semi-circle structures. (Did we take a wrong turn and hit the local space launch center??)

8. UPMC Hamot Womens Hospital, Erie, PA

Standard recovery not doing it for you? Steal away from the ward for a few hours on a boat in the adjacent harbour. (Okay, we don’t actually advocate stealing watercraft or escaping from the hospital, but the fact this nicely-appointed structure is next to a prime Pennsylvanian waterway is pretty cool.)

7. The Elliot at Rivers Edge, Manchester, NH

Location, location, location. Sure, the building is easy to look at, but the view (assuming you’re recovering on the right side of the building) is tremendous. Big windows with a view can go a long way to speeding recovery. Add stylish architecture to the mix and you’ve got one of America’s most beautiful hospitals.

6. LeConte Medical Center, Sevierville, TN

Faux stonework creates a disarming exterior for what could have been an otherwise intimidating experience. This four-winged compass layout radiates away from the center atrium all the way out to four spokes leading out to its walkways and parking lots.

5. Columbus Regional Hospital, Columbus, IN

New-fashioned design meets old-fashioned elegance in this inviting low-rise hospital with classical charm and modern flair.

4. West Kendall Baptist Hospital, Miami, FL

Our highest-ranking Florida entry looks more like a deluxe resort at Disney World than a hospital. With a grand entrance road lined with palm trees and flanked with reflecting pools you’d be tempted to take a dip in, its easy to see how this hospital might lift patient spirits just as much as a ride on Pirates of the Caribbean.

3. Stony Brook University Hospital, Stony Brook, NY

Some great pieces of architecture are inspiring, even stirring. Occasionally they are also challenging, perplexing, and just-plain-fun. Such might be the case for patients or visitors wandering under the upper-stories of our second-runner-up, or upon traversing one of its several multi-level glass bridges between wings. Interiors are lit with smarts and sophistication.

2. Chippewa County Montevideo Hospital, Montevideo, MN

You could argue that one sign of a well-appointed hospital is that visitors often remark that its rooms feel like home – or at least a nice hotel room – and its public areas feel like the lobby of a fine hotel. Not only is this the case with our runner-up, but both architect and interior designers have built on medium touches like stone fireplaces with little touches such as hallways featuring works by local artists.

And the winner is…

1. Bon Secours St. Francis Medical Center, Midlothian, VA

From its Virginian-style railings in public atriums to a soaring decorative bell tower, this year’s most beautiful hospital is an architectural celebration of the American spirit. Starting with its welcoming (and extensive) landscaping and continuing with its low-rise profile, everything about this building welcomes patients and visitors to relax and regenerate.

As always, we’ve given you the chance to have your say on the country’s best-looking medical facilities.

But just in case you still don’t see your pick[s] above here (or you want to give some more insight into one of the winning entries), here’s your final final chance for this round: Have your say in the Comments section below…

Amazing that Stony Brook appears anywhere on the list. Sure the just completed lobby is nice, though a complete waste of New York State taxpayer money, but walk anywhere else and its all painted cinderblock like the other thousands of hospitals.

How did Columbus Regional make this list? I am shocked because there were more beautiful contenders. I think their employees were paid to vote over and over.

I checked out a lot of their websites – some of them could use a bit of work to make sure their “beautiful” reputation is extended to the web! Awesome list.

CWAZYWABBIT doesn’t know what they are talking about. I work at Columbus Regional Hospital and the employees that voted for it voted because they are proud of THEIR hospital. We all feel like part owners because we all believe in the standards that are put forth by the hospital. If they have not been there to see the beautiful brickwork, the lighting and architechtural highlights then they should not judge. We are very proud to be included in such an wonderful company as any of the hospitals that were up for voting. Also, I voted for several other hospitals and I know that there are other employees that voted for other hospitals also.

I love it that Union Hospital in Terre Haute, IN made the list, we are 12 miles from them and heartily agree they deserve to be here. It is very beautiful, but the best part is the theme continues in the individual rooms, with lovely floral prints throughout and very comfy furniture in the patients rooms, every detail attended to, and a wonderful staff. My husband (and I) were there for 5 days in April, then to an Indy hospital which didn’t compare to the comfort AT ALL. Good job Union.

St. Francis is beautiful and it is lovely inside the rooms as well. I have had two of my children there and they are wonderful! Would not go anywhere else. They actually have birds chirping as you walk along the pathway–very soothing.

I am very proud to say I work at #8 on the list and was part of the building and opening of this Beautiful Hospital!!! I didn’t know of this site and didn’t get a chance to vote, but think that the others look very beautiful!! It is nice to see the beauty in the architecture… I’m sure it helps lift the spirits of the patients to have such beautiful surroundings and I know from our Hospital, Beautiful Breathtaking Views as Well, Since we overlook the Beautiful Bay of Lake Erie.
